3 min 3 sec - 12/01/2007

Description: Muslim leader Sheikh Taj al-din al-Hilali has savaged Australia in an interview on Egyptian television.

======================

The Islamic Council of Victoria's women's officer, Saara Sabbagh, said, "Statements like that set us back 10 years, but I think the wider community doesn't take him too seriously any more — we certainly don't."* The council's spokesman Waleed Aly, also added that there were Muslims among convicts sent out in the first dozen years of settlement.

Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone said, "I remind Sheikh Hilali that if he doesn't like Australia or our heritage or our way of life, he doesn't have to come back".

How can a religious leader be so ignorant about the complexities of issues (gay rights, crime and punishment for rape) he talks about?

Furthermore, how can a religious leader be such a racist to our Anglo-Saxon brothers and sisters?

My family immigrated here from Asia. There were a lot of good aspects of living in our original country but Australians have built a nation that is better than ours. It is better because it more peaceful and there is less poverty.

If you made the decision to live in Australia, then you must also swallow your pride and accept that Australia and Australians have built a better country than you and your forefathers/mothers have done, no matter how proud you are of your background. Otherwise, why would you be here and not there? If you think it is better there, then what's stopping you from going back?

So instead of behaving out of ignorance and fear, why not relax and see if you can learn something from these Anglo-Saxon Australians whose fathers and forefathers built this nation and is now sharing it with those who are willing and able to come here, Sheikh Hilali?
